Infant feeding in emergencies

Infants are vulnerable in emergencies. They are highly susceptible to infection and dehydration, and their specific food and fluid requirements mean they need special attention in an emergency response.

Breastfeeding is the safest way to feed an infant during an emergency.

Formula-fed infants need supplies of infant formula and access to feeding and sterilising equipment, and clean, safe water.  Loss of power supply and clean, safe water can make the safe preparation of infant formula difficult, placing infant health at risk.
